Music Students Receive Gift

This week Music In The Schools non-profit organization donated dozens of instruments to local band, orchestra and Mariachi programs. Stahl Elementary received 5 guitars and a xylophone percussion kit. The students squealed in-delight…it was like Christmas morning opening presents.

Foster Elementary School also received a donation of five keyboards to replace their cardboard keyboards. Ms. Grim reported, the day after receiving the delivery, that the students were eagerly taking turns at their chance with the new keyboards.

Other deliveries were made to Wrenn Middle School, Harris Academy and Irving Academy.

Dear Teachers,
A US Army representative and I would like to visit your class to speak with your students about the U.S. Army High School Drum Line & Mariachi Contest. At this time we will distribute tickets and posters and briefly go over what you can expect the night of the conest (performance schedule, US Army tour, text voting, etc.). The meeting should take between 5 and 10 minutes.

Competing Schools Announced

Eighteen high schools from Bexar and surrounding counties have been confirmed for participation in the 2011 U.S. Army High School Drum Line and Mariachi Contest. Ten schools have returned from last year’s event and eight new schools join the 2011 competition. Will there be a new first place winner in the 2011 contest? Both Steele High School (Drum Line Contest) and Fox Tech (Mariachi) are back to defend their titles. Will they hold onto 1st Place or will one of the newcomers claim the victory spot? Judge’s scores and audience text votes will determine the final rankings.

Dear Music Teachers,

You will be receiving the official contest information packet today 10/22 or Monday 10/25. The packet includes important instructions, deadlines and release forms for the 2011 U.S. Army High School Drum Line & Mariachi Contest.

It is important that every student who will be performing and accompanying you to Sunset Station accurately completes a U.S. Army Release Form and a Music In The Schools media release forms. Any student who is 17 years of age or younger, must have a partent/guardian sign the forms – no exceptions. If your students performed in the contest last year, they must still complete all release forms for this year’s competition.

If you have any questions about any of the information contained in the packet please “leave a reply” on this blog. We will receive it and respond.

Only 2 Spots Remain

We are closing in on announcing the final list of schools to compete in the 2011 U.S. Army High School Drum Line and Mariachi Contest. Only two spots remain open for the Mariachi contest as of the time and date of this announcement. Three spots remain open for the Drum Line Competition. Lots of newcomers to this year’s competition, and some repeats. Stay tuned for the big announcement!

New Requirements for Middle Schoolers

The State Board of Education now requires middle schoolers to have one fine arts credit before graduation. This is great news for music educators. However, with growing classes, schools now face a shortage of musical instruments. Many schools loan instruments to students and with an increase in class size, there’s a greater need for instruments.

Music In The Schools non-profit organization is here to help. We’ll be collecting new and used instruments in our musical instrument drive and delivering them to area schools. Instrument drop-off dates, November 20th (Universal Toyota) and December 4th (Alamo Music Center).

The Music In The Schools instrument drive is gearing up to be a great community event. Starting November 20, 2010, we will be accepting donation of new and used instruments to distribute to public schools accross the county. There are two drop off locations:

Oops! We noticed that some old information was on our confirmation page. If while you were submitting your contest entry form, you received a page that mentioned 1st, 2nd and 3rd place monetary prizes; that information is outdated. All schools that compete will receive educational scholarships – regardless of ranking.

The current contest rules are written on our website at www.musicintheschools.com/entry-form. The same page where you filled out your entry form.

Also, to be sure that you are registered, you would have received a confirmation email from us with this in the subject: “Contest Entry Form: Subscription Confirmed”. The email contains your contact information. If you got that email from us, you are in!!! Congratulations!!!

Looks Like a Re-Match

Last night Music In The Schools launched the entry process for the 2011 U.S. Army High School Drum Line and Mariachi contest. Already four schools from Bexar county have entered the contest. Looks like the contest is gearing up to be a re-match from last year! Watch out! We might have a new 1st place winner. Schools will be announced soon.
